National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help
The National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Green Bay, Wisconsin, is the only location in the United States that is Marian apparition approved by the Catholic Church. In 2018, Our Lady of Good Help received a donation of a marble casting of Michelangelo's Pieta featuring Jesus and his mother Mary. The piece shows Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after Crucifixion. The original sculpture is in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City.
Don Warden, chief operations officer, says the donation was graciously accepted as not everyone can travel to Italy to see the original. "That image just does such a wonderful job of showing mercy, of graceful suffering and obviously we have many challenges in the world now too and that’s why a lot of people come here for spiritual, physical healing and we think that that image is going to be a real grace for people to be able to recognize the suffering," Warden said.
Michelangelo's Pieta's temporary home will be in the 1941 Chapel as construction is set to begin on the site's new building to address capacity issues. The new multi-purpose building will be able to take its 300-chapel capacity to 1,200 people. It will also feature additional conference gathering space and a kitchenette area. Once construction on the new building is complete, the Pieta will be moved in the new building which will focus on the theme, "Mother of Mercy."
